Irish high schools are open for approximately nine months between September and June. The exact length of the programme will depend on the annual school calendar. There are three school semesters in the academic year which are;
September – December
January – Easter (Easter is typically March/April) &
Easter – June.
A student can choose to attend their chosen school from September-December or January-June or the full academic year – September to June. Please note early application is essential.
The Secondary School in Ireland has a duration of 6 years and is divided into a first three-year "Junior Cycle", a year of "Transition Year" and a final two-year term called "Senior Cycle". The "Transition Year" proposes a combination of academic and practical subjects, where work experience is also provided. In this transition year, students are not required to take any exam. In the final two years, the "Senior Cycle", 6/8 subjects are studied, of which English and Mathematics are mandatory
The personal care of each student is very important to us at EirStudy. We are 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to make sure little problems don’t become big problems. At EirStudy we are parents, and with having over 950 students pass through our care we have had many different personalities so with that in mind we fully understand children and the feelings of parents when their child leaves home. We can guarantee dedication to the welfare and happiness of each child attending our programmes. We promise our unique personalised service ensures your child has a safe, secure, happy and memorable experience of life in Ireland.
Don’t worry, if there is something you don’t like when you arrive on the program we will work together with you and the school and/or host family to ensure you are going to fulfil your goals and have the happiest experience. This helps us to provide a home away from home experience.
A host family provides a uniquely warm and culturally interesting form of accommodation in Ireland by giving students the opportunity to live within the unit of an Irish family.
We achieve this by insisting on the highest standard of accommodation and selecting only the best quality families through a rigorous interview and vetting procedure.
EirStudy has a large database of trusted host families who choose to work with us and provide a home for our visiting students. We take the utmost care in selecting and matching specific student requirements with the most appropriate host family for their requirements and indeed to match personalities.
Our host families are as varied and diverse as Ireland itself. They may be a couple with or without children, a retired couple, or a single adult. They would all provide a friendly family atmosphere and positive social interaction
We frequently visit all of our families, all of whom are Garda vetted for our and your protection.
We expect our host families to welcome their student into the home, treat them exactly as they would their own children. Provide clean and comfortable living accommodation and a balanced and appropriate diet and a homely atmosphere.
Students from EU member states who are in possession of the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) are entitled to public health services in Ireland. This card is available from health authorities in your home country. Further information to your rights on healthcare while here can be obtained on the European Health Insurance Card website.
For students from non-EU countries, you will be required to have medical insurance in place in order to be granted a visa.
The friendly and welcoming culture and beautiful landscapes make the Emerald Isle the perfect destination for international students. We will choose the school which we feel would be best suited to your academic skills set and future ambitions.
You will have to attend school alongside local students. You will have to study, attend class and do your homework! In return, you’ll have an exceptional opportunity to experience everyday life in an Irish school, and make friends with local students and indeed with other exchange students from around the world.
A typical school day starts at around 08:45 in the majority of schools and finishes around 15:45.
You have the option of providing a region preference for the county where you would like to be placed. Please note that this is a preference only and not an absolute guarantee. But unlike other organisations we will not be charging a premium fee to choose a school. We will advise you of the area that best matches your personality and requirements for social activities e.g. Hurling, football, Music, etc
Our host families are fully Garda vetted as are all EirStudy staff. This provides peace of mind to you knowing that your child is safe in our care. Our own EirStudy vetting is rigorous. The better the host family we choose, the better the experience you will have.
Of course this can be arranged but we would advise that only natural parents and their siblings shoudl visit to avoid home-sickness. We would always encourage a visit in the later end of the program. Visits early into their stay can cause/inflame any home-sickness.
Yes you will have the opportunity to travel home during school holidays throughout the year or in the event of a personal or family emergency. We would encourage all students to experience all of the Irish culture whilst on this journey. This includes an Irish family Christmas, Halloween and Easter celebrations. However no two students are the same and we can discuss your requirements depending on your feelings and preferences.
This is a fear of many students. Making friends is certainly not easy, you have to put a lot of time and energy into it, but it is certainly worth it. Many of our former students have formed lifelong friends in their home country and in Ireland. So don't worry too much about this and let it all happen.
All students in Irish schools wear uniform – and you will be no different! Wearing a uniform can feel strange at first, but it means that you don’t have to think about what to wear in the mornings and that you will quickly blend in with local students. Uniforms vary from school to school but we will help you organise your required uniform when you arrive in Ireland.

Ireland's climate can be summed up as being mild, moist and changeable with abundant rainfall and a lack of temperature extremes. Bring plenty of warm clothes, walking footwear and a Raincoat !!
